Why I'm Producing a Show on Design, Technology, and Creative Discipline

I’m kicking up a daily Q&A show about design, technology, and creative discipline! Want to be on the show? Go here.

Every time I sit down to write a blog post, I’m bursting with things to say. My mind outpaces my fingers and I lose one thought as I stumble to get down another.

Writing always feels like cutting against the grain. For the last year, I’ve tried to push myself through the process. I’ve focused on linear stories, documenting the process behind my projects—but not as thoroughly or often as I would like.

Yet, somehow, I’ve pulled together hours of material for speaking events, classes, and workshops in the same timeframe. Go figure.

Yet, somehow, I’ve pulled together hours of material for speaking events, classes, and workshops in the same timeframe. Go figure.

Is the answer a renewed commitment to writing? I don’t think so. Writing is convenient—it’s easy to edit, style, and distribute—but it’s not my best medium.

What if instead of trying to write like I talk… I just talk?

I’ve been on the road a lot this year with a talk called MAKE IT HAPPEN, where I share my techniques for producing a ton of work and developing a consistent practice.

Most recently, I gave this talk at Adobe MAX. It’s typically 30-40 minutes in length, but I extended it to 75 minutes for MAX’s longer sessions. I had, like, 200 slides. And I could have kept going.

Afterward, I hung out in the hallway answering questions for an hour.

I miss that about teaching in a traditional classroom environment. That direct form of problem-solving. When I’ve spoken at schools and universities, it’s been clear that Q&A is the most valuable part.

What are you struggling with?

It’s time for something new. I’m kicking up a daily Q&A show about design, technology, and creative discipline called House Rules.
